In 1924, Hidesaburō Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo took in Hachikō as a pet. During his owner's life Hachikō saw him out from the front door and greeted him at the end of the day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until May 1925, when Professor Ueno did not return on the usual train one evening. The professor had suffered from a cerebral hemorrhage at the university that day. He died and never returned to the train station where his friend was waiting. Hachikō was loyal (忠犬ハチ公 ) and every day for the next nine years he waited sitting there amongst the town's folk.

En 1924, un professeur du département d'agriculture de l'université impériale de Tōkyō (l'actuelle université de Tōkyō), Hidesaburō Ueno (上野 英三郎, Ueno Hidesaburō), achète un chien et lui donne le nom de Hachi (Huit en japonais, car c'était le huitième chiot de la portée, le suffixe kō rattaché au nom étant un terme affectueux). Lorsque le professeur Ueno se rend à l'université, Hachikō l'accompagne tous les jours jusqu'à la porte et parfois jusqu'à la gare de Shibuya. L'emplacement de la maison où résidait Hidesaburō Ueno serait dans les environs du siège social de la compagnie Tokyu Department Store Co., Ltd. (東急百貨店, Tōkyū hyakkaten).
Le 21 mai 1925, Hidesaburō Ueno meurt au travail, d'une attaque d'apoplexie. Cependant Hachikō continue de se rendre tous les jours à la gare de Shibuya pour attendre son retour. Hachikō est rendu célèbre quelques années plus tard par un article du Tōkyō Asahi Shimbun. Pour ses qualités, Hachikō reçoit le surnom de Chūken (« chien fidèle »).
Une première statue de bronze fut érigée en l'honneur de Hachikō devant la gare de Shibuya en avril 1934 et Hachikō lui-même était présent lors de l'inauguration.[source : Wikipedia]
